MSI’s attempt at a top gaming machine under 1000 USD falls shorter of some other options ins the price range, but is still a great machine. The highlights of this machine are the beautiful HD display, a cooling system built for VR gaming, and a keyboard designed for gamers.

Performance in Games

A 7th generation i7 processor is the highlight for the hardware. Simply top of the line for gaming.

The NVIDIA GTX960M is a great graphics card, however it is a drawback in this case with only 2GB of GDDR5. Especially with the high quality display, we would have liked to see a bit better graphics card

8GB DDR4 is not the best for gaming. I wouldn’t plan on multitasking or streaming on this laptop.

1TB HDD is great for longevity in this machine. Not as functional for gaming as an SDD. Definitely look to upgrade to an SSD if it’s in your budget. Overall, the power level is similar to some of the other laptops in the price range, but this one could use a few upgrades in hardware.

You will only get about an hour of full on gaming time with the battery included. This is very light so you will not want to venture too far from a power socket with this laptop.

The customizable steel series keyboard is a good addition and provides gamers with exactly what they need. Enhanced WASD zone, programmable keys, and a quick response time.

The screen is the main selling point of this PC. MSI has put a lot of effort into making this display as high definition as possible. The eDP Vivid Color will bring your games to life.

Connection and Ports

Nothing too special for ports. It’s going to get the job done.

1TB HDD could be an SDD to make the machine faster overall. Clearly MSI was focused on the display and surround sound over sheer speed. It is a large HDD which makes the machine great for gamers with a large library.

Another big feature is the Nahamic 2 virtual surround sound. With the standard speakers in the laptop, MSI brings you virtual 7.1 surround sound.

The general design is typical of MSI. This machine absolutely has a gaming laptop feel to it, and is quite solid. Some say that it has been less portable and more ‘luggable’ hinting at a bulky design.

Quite a few complaints of the fans overshadowing the virtual 7.1 surround sound experience. However, it is important to keep this machine cool as the components tend to run quite hot.

Heating can be an issue if you are not keeping the laptop on a hard surface. This becomes even more important if you have the machine plugged in which you are likely to do because it only has a battery up time of 1 hr.

5.29 lbs. Overall, it seems the ‘luggable’ comments are well founded. This is a bit heavier than some of its competitors.

My Thoughts

This machine seems to have some significant drawbacks as far as heat and battery. But the fact remains that it will run your games smoothly. If you are fine fighting through some heat and noise issues this laptop may be for you.
