High-performance gaming laptop with enthusiast-grade graphics and silent cooling system

This is the motto which Asus uses to advertise GL551JW 15.6 gaming laptop. GL551JW comes from the Republic of Gamers (ROG) series. These laptops were designed from beginning to end to maximize gaming performance.

Performance in Games

CPU

The ASUS ROG has a Quad Core i7-4720HQ processor clocked 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost technology that can increase processor speed up to 3.6 GHz. The Processor has Integrated Intel HD4600 graphics, which allows you to perform simple office work at reduced power consumption of the battery.

GPU

ASUS uses the powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX960M with 2 GB RAM. This graphics card should allow you to play any current game on high setting and will allow you to play most of the games that will be released in the next couple of years.

RAM

The ASUS GL551JW is the only laptop under $1000 that has 16 GB RAM, giving you plenty of free space to run even the most demanding games and still leaving you plenty of RAM for background processes.

ASUS ROG is as powerful as possible in this price range you have a quad core i7 processor, GTX960 GPU with 2 GB ram GPU only beater GPU you can get is also GTX 960 with 4 GB ram, but from other hand, you get 16 GB RAM which is also best you can get in this price range.

Features

Screen

The ASUS ROG has a Full-HD TN display (1920 x 1080 pixels). Unfortunately, ASUS cut costs on screen and include in the ROG TN display rather than IPS, Screen is pretty good but the skilled eye will see differently. The screen surface is matte, which will mean no problems with reflections. The minus point of this screen is that its size, at 15”, may sometimes be too small for serious gaming, but you can always plug in an additional monitor while you are at home.

Connection and Ports

The GL551JW has 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and 1 GB LAN RJ45 port.

When it comes to connectivity, the ASUS ROG GL551JW offers:

On the left side: mini-DisplayPort, HDMI, RJ45 and two USB 3.0 ports.

On the right side: 3.5-inch audio jack, third USB 3.0 port, the built-in DVD/CD burner, and near the rear edge a cable-locking slot and SD-card slot.

Storage

The ASUS GL551JW has a 1 TB HDD disc with 7200 RPM, which will provide you with plenty of space for games. I would love to have an SSD disc in this laptop but under $1000, this is not possible.

Audio

The laptop is equipped with integrated audio ASUS SonicMaster technology that uses Waves MaxxAudio Master.

This system was created through the cooperation of the IWaves Company and Asus. IWaves is a leading provider of audio systems for digital audio processing for professionals.

For powerful sound and richer bass, it is equipped with an 11W discrete amplifier. The sound is good quality and spacious but unfortunately, the speakers are located on the bottom, which will muffle the sound.

QUALITY & DESIGN

The ASUS ROG GL551JW design is a nice one, with brushed aluminum casing featuring the ASUS logo. It has a full backlit keyboard, which is quite comfortable to use. Red keyboard backlighting makes it handy to use at night and also makes the ROG hot-looking. Red details and LED indicators on the front edge to complete the look. Users who prefer separate mouse buttons on the touch pad will be disappointed; this model comes with the latest trend in design without mechanical buttons.

My Thoughts

Heat is a player’s worst enemy, but not in the ASUS ROG. The GL 551 has a powerful thermal solution: its cooling system keeps the temperature at a comfortable level even during extreme gaming.

The ASUS ROG is an almost perfect gaming laptop for under $1000, and the only place in which it could be improved would be by getting an SSD disc to decrease loading time and by having a bigger screen. But at under $1000, this is almost impossible. Overall, it is one of the best budget gaming laptops.
