ASUS ROG is always top of the line when it comes to gaming. This machine uses the older 6th generation i7, but is still one of the best values in this price range. It has pretty much everything you’d ever want in a gaming laptop plus the ASUS brand name on it.

6th generation CPU is a mild drawback for this machine. It should still run anything under the sun. The only drawback is the laptop may only last 3-4 years before it needs replacing as opposed to 5-6 for higher quality laptops.

GTX 960M is the perfect fit for this machine. Still looking to build value, but staying current enough with the hardware to play today’s hottest titles.

16GB RAM is exactly what we want in this machine! Perfect for multitasking and running newer games.

This machine has the combination hard drive system that is popular right now. SSDs will have a higher cost per GB ratio, so manufacturers build value by putting a smaller SSD and a larger HDD. It works, but the user should make sure they know exactly how to get the most out of that set up.

The standard keyboard has gaming sensitivity set for ultra-fast reaction times. You will also get 4.5 hrs of general use out of the battery. A bit less for gaming sessions.

The screen is a Matte display. It won’t look as shiny as some other machines, but won’t have a nasty glare either.

HDD and SDD combo. The combination isn’t the favorite setup of many gamers, but ASUS realized this and made the access to the hard drives very simple. Replacing either drive is simple

The design of all ROG products are made with a gamer in mind. Futuristic type designs with cool angles make this product great to look at. This machine also offers users a more solid design with a one piece keyboard and less moving parts.

Keeping this machine cool is a bit of an issue. Considering that, the noise is about what we expect. Although, it is not the stealthiest of machines.

This machine does well to cool itself, however, most of the heat is routed through smaller vents causing the vent itself to be hot to the touch. Keep that vent in mind during longer gaming sessions.

Amazon has this beat listed at 9.3 lbs. According to many reviews and ASUS, it is far lighter than that. Weighing in somewhere around 4.3 lbs.

My Thoughts

Overall, this was a heavy contender for the top laptop in this price range. However, the storage situation is a bit of a drawback and the heating issues caused us to evaluate this machine a bit lower. Still a great machine, especially for the price.
