Lenovo Y50

image002“If you’re looking for a laptop that will deliver the ultimate gaming and multimedia experience, look no further,” this motto advertises the latest 15.6’ gaming laptop from Lenovo, which I will review today.

image002“Entertainment laptops with unparalleled quad-speaker sound and a striking Full HD IPS display,” that’s how ASUS describes its multimedia laptop N550JK. ASUS N550JK-DS71T is not designed as a gaming laptop, but it is designed as a multimedia laptop but it can do as good as many laptops branded gaming laptops. Because ASUS has equip its laptop with Powerful 4th generation Intel ® Core processors and NVIDIA ® GeForce graphics this will allow you to play any current game.

After the success of Lenovo’s previous model IdeaPad Y510p, Lenovo decide to go even further and change the standard business look for much more exciting one. Y50 appearance resembles Alienware laptops. Its appearance makes it look more like Ultrabook then laptop.

Keyboard layout in Y50 is identical to y510p. The metal surface of the workspace was covered in pleasant to touch rubber. The obvious thing that we meet in this type of constructions dedicated for gamers is backlighted keyboard, which allows a comfortable gaming at night. It have backlighted keyboard with two brightness levels.

On top and bottom of the aluminum screen, chasing y50 is getting slimmer which make it look a little like a sport car mask. To make the laptop look even more aggressive, Lenovo added small, red details here and there and if you switch on red keyboard backlighting, you will see something that look like aggressive red Ferrari ready to go. All this makes Y50 definitely one of the hottest of laptops I tested.

91s+rZOe2ZL._SL1500_Asus N550JK design is nice, with metallic-colour, aluminum chasing featuring the ASUS logo. High quality slim chassis with Full-HD Touchscreen display.

It has a full backlight keyboard with numeric keys, which is quite comfortable to use. Touchpad is large, very carefully reads the movement of your fingers, and supports gestures.

Y50 is designed solely for gamers. In order to meet the requirements of the latest games, Full HD version has been equipped with Quad Core i7 -4710HQ 2.5 GHz processor and Ultra HD version is equipped with Quad Core i7 -4720HQ 2.6 GHz.

Both features Hyper-Threading technology that increases the number of threads used to eight, and Turbo Boost technology that allows you to overclock a core up to 3.5 GHz in FHD version and 3,6 GHz in UHD.

Processor has an integrated graphics chip Intel HD 4600, which allows you to browse the internet and work with simple 2D graphics at a reduced power consumption from the battery.

It has been equipped with i7-4700HQ 2.4 GHz processor. This Quad Core processor features Turbo Boost technology that allows you to overclock cores up to 3.5 GHz.

The processor has an integrated Intel graphics HD 4600 chip, which allows you to browse the Internet and work with simple 2D graphics at reduced power consumption from the battery.

For games and 3D graphics, Y50 is equipped with upper mid-range graphics card. Despite the fact that the predecessor of Y50 had two graphics cards (the second mounted instead of the optical drive), I believe that the one in the Y50 is stronger.

The y50 model I’m testing here is equipped with Nvidia GeForce GTX860M GPU with 2 GB of ram. GTX860M GPU should meet the requirements of any game lover.

For games and 3D graphics, N550JK is equipped with a lower mid-range graphics card Nvidia GeForce GTX850M with 2 GB RAM. This card will allow you to play any current PC games and most of them on high setting.

As I already mentioned, N550JK is not designed for gamers. But since it has been equipped with i7-4700HQ 2.4 GHz processor and GTX850M GPU, you can play comfortable even most demanding games.

Y50 have installed 8 or 16 gigabyte DDR3 RAM. 8 GB should be enough for any current game but in a future you may need 16 GB.

ASUS N550JK has 8 or 16 GB of DDR3 ram, giving you sufficient space to run even the most demanding game.

For storage, you will get a hybrid disc with 1 TB 5400 RPM HDD drive + 8 GB SSD cache or 256 SSD disc.

ASUS N550JK can have a 1 TB HDD disc with 5400 RPM Speed which will provide you with plenty of space for games. But unfortunately, only 5400 RPM slows computers quite a bit. Or it can have 256 SSD disc.

To accommodate the players who have come to expect with gaming laptops high resolution and sharp graphics, Lenovo uses in this model 15.2’ full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) or UHD (3840 x 2160) IPS display.

Applied matrix provides good angles of vision however, screen surface is not matt, which may be a problem because of the reflections for users in bright room, problem is much smaller in UHD version but still exist in it.

There are also available version of y50 with touchscreen you will find details abut them on a button in comparison chart.

In this model, the screen will satisfy all the players who have come to expect in high resolution in games.

Touchscreen is very precise, easy to use, and supports all built in Windows 8 gestures.

ASUS N550JK have very good 15.6-inch anti-glare IPS Touch display with full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) with viewing angle of 178-degree, and in this price tag (under $1000) it is best touchscreen laptop suited for gaming, I find.

Audio chip in Lenovo Y50 was created by an American audio electronics company JBL (JBL is currently owned by image012Harman International). Participation as reputable company in creating sound for Y50 gave excellent results. JBL® speakers and subwoofer with Advanced Audio V2 offers clear sound even at the maximum volume and immersive experience when watching movies and during playing games. The sound is so exquisite and spacious that even melomans will be happy with its quality.

The audio of this laptop was created in cooperation with the Danish company, Bang & Olufsen, which has operated on the market since 1925. The company specializes in the production of top-quality sound systems for audiophiles.

The N550JK with a Bang & Olufsen quad-speaker array producing theater-like surround sound. Thanks to excellent built-in Laptop, speakers high and midrange sounds are very clear. And thanks to the external subwoofers included in a box, basses are very deep and the whole sound that N550JK emits is a pure, natural, and excellent.

The whole thing can play really loudly; In terms of sound quality is one the best laptop I tested.

Connection and ports

For connection, y50 has Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 card, with 1 GB LAN RJ45 port that you will find on the left side of laptop and Bluetooth Version 4.0.

When it comes to ports Lenovo Y50 offers on left side: LAN, HDMI and 2 USB 3.0 ports and on right side 2 audio ports, analog and digital S/PDIF, memory card reader, USB 2.0 and Kensington lock.

For connections ASUS N550JK has Integrated 802 .11b Wi-Fi ac, built-in Bluetooth v4.0 and 10/100/1000 RJ45 LAN port which you will find on the left side.

image010When it comes to ports N550JK offers on the left side: power subwoofer jack, LAN, HDMI, mini DisplayPort, two USB 3.0 and audio jack

image012on the right side: the SD-card slot, third USB 3.0, the built-in Blu-ray, and near the rear edge Kensington cable-locking slot.

Both laptop are pretty good and to chose which one is for you you should ask your self 2 questions what will you be doing with laptop and how much you can spend. If you are looking for laptop for gaming go for any of Lenovo Y50 they offer beater performance because of more powerful GPU. If you want touchscreen laptop that is suited for gaming or multimedia on a budget go for ASUS N550. But if price is not problem for you definitely best chose is Lenovo Y50 UHD 15.6-Inch Touchscreen
