MSI GX60 DESTROYER-280 – Review

“The Ultimate Weapon for Battlefield 4 Players.” GX60 Destroyer is newest budget gaming laptop from MSI. GX60 have 15.6-inch screen and is equipped with AMD Richland A10-5750M 2.5 GHz processor and AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics card.

Design

I think GX60 looks nice, with black aluminum chasing featuring the MSI logo. Such aesthetic and durable chasing are already standard in gaming laptops.

It has a 15.6-inch screen with full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), which is standard in this price range.

I would like to draw your attention to the full 103 keys professional gaming keyboard designed by well-known company SteelSeries. This keyboard has separated numeric keys, which raises the comfort of the office work on this laptop. But they are not its only advantages. This is a fully gaming keyboard with programmable keys and multicolored backlighting for individual keys. GX also has a multi-touch touchpad that can recognize multiple fingers taping and gestures. I can say that it is very precise.

Processor

In order to meet the requirements of the latest games, it has been equipped with a Quad Core AMD Richland A10-5750M 2.5 GHz processor.

Processor has an integrated graphics chip Radeon HD 8650G that offers 384 shaded units (VLIW4) and are clocked at 533-720 MHz

Graphic

You will get dedicated graphics card AMD Radeon ™ R9 M290X with 2 GB of DDR5 memory. This is a good card that will be useful in many applications, games, and entertainment functions. Working with integrated Radeon HD 8650G GPU in a tandem should meet the requirements of any game lover. To give you some perspective of it power, I would say that it is somewhere in a between GTX860 and GTX 870. And best Nvidia GPU you can get in gaming laptops under $1000 is GTX860 so R9 is very competitive in this price range.

RAM

Laptop have installed 8 GB SO-DIMM DDR3 GB RAM and that should be enough for any current game.

Storage

This notebook is equipped with a 2.5-inch 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD drive. This will provide you with plenty of space for games.

Screen

In order to fully satisfy those who are looking for a grate gaming experience, GX60 is equipped with 15.6 full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) anti-glare LCD panel in LED backlight. Applied matrix provides good angles of vision. And with AMD Eyefinity technology, you can connect to a laptop up to three monitors.

Audio

Demanding players should be interested in high-quality sound card Sound Blaster Cinema with better surround effects. Thanks to it, you will get the amazing sound quality that can be compared with headphones. All sounds effect are reproduced clyster clear allowing you to enjoy long gaming sessions without having headphones on.

Connection and ports

For connection, GX60 has a wireless card, 1 GB LAN RJ45 port that you will find on rear side of laptop and Bluetooth Version 4.0.

In the GX60 for the first time in laptop, MSI incorporated Killer E2200 Intelligent Networking, giving them grate network speed. Smart Advanced Game Detect can recognizes gaming network data packets and processes them first. This will help with freezes and lags while playing online shooter or MMO.

Laptop GX60 offers on left side: 2 USB 3.0, memory card reader and the third USB 3.0 port.

On the right side, four audio ports: Headphone out/SPDIF-out, microphone, line in, line out, USB 2.0, and the optical drive.

Rear Side: Kensington Lock, Power Connector, RJ-45 LAN Connector, VGA Port, Mini-Display, HDMI, analog, and digital S/PDIF, and Kensington Lock.

My thought

While working on the Internet or in Microsoft Office applications GX60’s big, cooling system is almost inaudible. Also great is the cooling of the GPU and CPU and venting off while playing games. Thanks to that laptop chasing don’t heats up too hard and does not cause discomfort. But that comes of a price of much bigger size of laptop.

Unfortunately, AMD A10 CPU is inferior compared with intel i7 and that’s processor most gaming laptops have, but you will get Radeon R9 GPU which is better than most of GPU that are in laptops in this price range. Ultimately, it is still a good laptop that is suited to gaming, but I would go for some laptop with i7 processor like y50 or Asus ROG GL551.
