There are so many different laptop configurations that it can be hard to know exactly how a system will perform. Gaming laptops often can often be plagued with problems in their operation when features do not support each other adequately.

If a top grade graphics card can’t run due to a weak processor, or inadequate RAM, it can screw up the system and negate any benefit from the advanced feature.

Building a complete system for gaming is as much an art as it is a science…

Once in a blue moon, fate shines on a particular model that gets the balance right and an optimal laptop is created. The MSI GL62M is one of those models and will provide hours of fun for the serious gamer – and no frustration.

Pros:

  • Adequate RAM
  • 128GB SSD Helps access your most-used information faster
  • Decent Graphics Card
  • Large Screen
  • Cool Boost 4
  • Lightweight
  • Backlit Keyboard (Red)

Cons:

  • Limited four hour battery life

The MSI GL62M Main Features

There are lot of great features in this laptop, such as the 128GB SSD that’s used to access your most used information faster. This will also speed up your boot time as well.

You’ll have plenty of storage space with the hard drive of 1TB and will be able to fill it up with great games like Overwatch, Doom, Battlefield 1 and Gears of War 4 – each of them running at over FPS on the highest settings.

There’s enough RAM to prevent any bottlenecking, or slow-down, when running a single task. if you stick to one thing at a time but if you’re multitasking whilst using applications that require a lot of memory, that may cause an issue.

The NVIDIA GTX 1050 is a very solid graphics card and it means you’ll be able to enjoy the latest games on the highest settings with a very respectable FPS.

Having a 17.3″ screen will make you feel like you’re playing on a desktop PC. The MSI GL62M still maintains a lightweight, but it is at the expense of its battery. This will only keep you going for 4 hours.

The Cool Boost 4 will keep the laptop from getting too hot, even if you’re playing very graphically intensive games.

What Type Of Gamer Would Benefit From This Rig?

You can expect to be playing lots of games on high/ultra settings with framerates of 50 or higher. If you like to experience games in all their glory, then you will really appreciate the MSI GL62M’s power.

You may only encounter a few games with a recommended RAM of 16GB, which is the only area this rig comes up a little short.

Games like Titanfall 2 and Mass Effect Andromeda will still be playable on medium-high settings, but you might encounter a little bottlenecking if you’re trying to play with the maximum settings.

If you’re a fan of medieval combat, like me, you’ll be glad to know that For Honor runs really well on this laptop with smooth gameplay as you can see in this benchmark and gameplay video.

Getting The Most Out Of This System

The vast majority of today’s games won’t need more than 8GB RAM. If you stick to games in this range for specs then you will get the full experience, on the highest settings.

With the battery only lasting for 4 hours you’ll almost always need to have it plugged in, or you’ll suffer a shutdown mid-game (the bane of all laptop gamers).

Competitive games like Call of Duty: WW2 will run well on this system, although if you like to make sure your competitors don’t have an edge, you’ll stick to medium settings.

Battlegrounds is still as popular as ever and here’s some great footage of the kind of gameplay you can expect to have with the MSI GL62M.

Should I Buy The MSI GL62M 7RDX 1408

It’s a very good system for the price tag, and because of all the fantastic hardware inside it received a well-deserved Editor’s pick. I struggled to find anything that was negative, apart from the 4-hour battery life, and it’s a weak negative at best as most people will have a power point or battery pack nearby anyway.

You can purchase games without having to worry about the recommended system specifications. Even the games that recommend 16GB will still be playable on lower settings. You shouldn’t expect to be playing anything on less than medium settings.

The Bottom Line

If you want a great laptop which will last you for years, won’t overheat and can play all the latest and greatest games then you don’t need to look any further. Speaking as an ex-desktop PC gamer who now uses laptops, this would be a perfect machine for me.

It is fairly lightweight and easy to move around, and you get that big 17.3″ screen with an advanced graphics card. Ticks a lot of boxes for me.

How Does it Compare?

Acer Aspire VX 15

The Acer Aspire is actually a little more future-proof than the MSI, due to the 16GB RAM that it has. The processor and graphics card are also comparable to the MSI’s and you get a 256GB SSD, although you may find yourself deleting games to make room for new ones fairly often.

ASUS FX502VM-AS73 15.6″

For a little more money you get improvements in the graphics card, an upgrade to 16GB RAM which allows you to play any game without worrying about bottlenecking and the standard 1TB hard drive space will last you a lot longer than the Aspire’s faster but smaller SSD.

MSI GL62M 7RD-1407 15.6″

The 1408’s predecessor has a 256GB SSD which means everything your computer does will be faster, but you won’t be able to store as much. You’re getting exactly the same graphics card but the processor is a little weaker and the screen is 15.6″ with the 1407. The 1407 is also cheaper so if you don’t mind a drop in processing speed it makes a good alternative.
